Very few companies understand the true difference in fuel quality between one supplier and another or the resulting impact on fuel savings and engine lifetime. Whilst all fuel suppliers are legally required to apply a minimum amount of additives, some suppliers choose to exceed the minimum requirement with a view to offering increased engine protection and performance. Additives include detergents and do in fact matter as they help prevent fuel injector clogs and carbon deposits from forming in the combustion chambers, thereby impeding valve operation and engine performance.
Esso Synergy Fuels
For more than 130 years ExxonMobil, the world’s largest Public Energy company, has been committed to developing quality fuel products. Today ExxonMobil continues to lead the way, using its engineering expertise and focusing on technology and innovation to develop its Esso Synergy line of fuels.

Esso Synergy fuel technology – How it works
Born in the same ExxonMobil labs as the Formula 1 racing fuels, Esso Synergy fuel technology is engineered with 7 key ingredients to help you get better mileage.
Fuel Detergent Number 1
This ingredient does the dirty work, helping to scrub away deposits and protect your engine from build-up, which over time can affect performance. It helps provide excellent protection against intake valve deposits in traditional PFI (Port Fuel Injector) injection engines.
Fuel Detergent Number 2
This ingredient goes the extra mile, scouring nooks and crannies to wash away even the toughest gunk. It helps provide Intake Valve Deposit protection for PFI engines and also provides additional protection for modern Direct Injection engines. Cleaner engine parts can lead to better gas mileage.
Anti-Adhesion Compound
Anti-Adhesion Compound helps prevent fuel detergents from forming a sticky film on the intake valves, which in turn helps prevent cold start problems at cold temperatures.
Corrosion Inhibitor
The Corrosion Inhibitor helps prevent rust in the fuel distribution system and/or key engine parts the fuel comes into contact with, such as the gas tank and the intake valves.
Demulsifier
Did you know fuel can get out of shape? The Demulsifier works hard to help prevent fuel from holding onto excess water that can accumulate in your gas tank and can wreak havoc in the distribution system.
Solvent Fluid
Changes in temperature can cause some ingredients to get jammed. The Solvent Fluid helps the additive ingredients stay mixed and to flow, and not freeze at very cold temperatures.
Anti foamant
Diesel fuel may form foam during filling, increasing the time you wait at the service station. The anti-foaming agent helps to fight foaming and offers you a full, continuous, uninterrupted filling.
ExxonMobil Quality Control
Stringent quality controls are in place at every step ensuring that Esso Synergy fuel specifications are always up to standard:
- At the refinery, where crude oil is refined into gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products, ExxonMobil conducts tests to verify that the fuel meets or exceeds engine builder and industry specifications.
- The fuel is tested again on the tanker prior to delivery to the terminal.
- At the terminal, ExxonMobil additives are precisely injected as each delivery truck is filled, ensuring the quality of fuel.
- Finally, fuel dispensers at Esso service stations have built-in filters to provide a final cleaning just before the fuel enters your vehicle’s tank.
- All Esso stations are equipped with automated specialized sensors to ensure that the fuel quality remains unaltered whilst in the station underground tanks, e.g. from water contamination.
